Like-minded individuals
I attended an Ivy League college and found that military school education didn’t prepare me too well. Now I had to study hard to make mediocre grades. I also felt socially isolated. I took a psychology course, which discussed conditioned learning (Skinner boxes, shocks, rewards, etc.).
Someone asked the professor if this was a suitable technique for treating homosexuality. He replied that he would not recommend that for such a condition. He would advise the person to move to New York where there was a community of like-minded, supportive individuals. That certainly made sense to me. Some time later when I was feeling frustrated about my lack of academic achievement and my social maladjustment, I decided to get on the train and go to New York for the weekend. When I got off at Grand Central Station and saw all those people, none of whom I knew, I felt a surge of power and excitement. Nobody knows me. I can do whatever I want. The adventure began. Hello 7 (Adventurer), and if lust has anything to do with it, hello 8 (Asserter). Over the next couple of years, life became much more fun. I was very lucky because I did meet some wonderful people, some of whom became genuine role models for me. Grades improved; I felt I had a future. —Andrew
Part III: The Observer and the Seven Goals
1. Developing the habit of doing tasks around home and good study habits (see #5). As a 5, you probably already have good study habits.
2. Being mindful of your body. Observers who are introverted, as most are, may not be as interested in the image they present as most other types are.
3. Being mindful of your social life. Sometimes Observers encourage themselves to make friends because they know it’s good for them, even when they must get away from their personal interests to do so.
